Design System Audit

What is design system audit?

A design system audit is a structured review and evaluation of an existing design system. The goal is to identify inconsistencies, redundancies, and areas for improvement in order to create a consistent and scalable design foundation for digital products.

This are the steps to follow

  1. Define goals
Define the goal of the audit (e.g., check for consistency, inventory components, identify technical debt), specify which products or platforms are included, and identify the stakeholders involved.
  2. UI Inventory
Collect screenshots or files of UIs (e.g., web/app screens, prototypes) and document all used components, colors, typography, icons, spacing, etc., to identify which components are used consistently and which are not.

  3. UI Consistency
Check whether a consistent color palette is used or if there are many variations. Examine if font sizes, line spacing, and font styles are applied consistently. Review whether UI components like buttons, form fields, and navigation patterns are uniform. Assess if there is a logical structure and categorization in how elements are named.
  4. Dev Handoff and Documentation
Evaluate how designers and developers communicate with each other. Identify any discrepancies between design and code. Check whether documentation already exists.

“Design systems bring order and consistency to digital products. They help to protect the brand, elevate the user experience, and increase the speed and efficiency of how we design and build products.” Andrew Couldwell
